Southern Israel Crisis Update

The war in Gaza may be over for now, but assistance for southern Israel residents, including trauma relief is still urgent. With close to a million Israelis within Hamas terrorist rocket range, anxiety remains high. United Jewish Appeal, through UIA Federations Canada (UIAFC) is taking a leadership role to ensure that aid is made available to those who have been besieged by relentless rocket attacks in Southern Israel. But we can’t do it without you. We urge you to participate in this critical initiative by contributing to the Southern Israel Relief Fund. Torontonians head to Southern Israel to show their solidarity Mission travels to Sderot, Be’ersheva

By Daniel Horowitz--Four members of Toronto’s Jewish community recently shared an experience that none of them is likely to forget. Peter Ekstein, Brad Fox, and Lorri Kushnir joined UJA’s Jeff Springer aboard an intense, whirlwind mission to Southern Israel.

The Toronto foursome split their time between Sderot and Be’er Sheva.

Student Led Rally Draws a crowd of 1000 in Downtown Toronto

A crowd, estimated by police at 1,000 people recently demonstrated their support for the people of Israel at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.  The outdoor rally, organized by a cross section of Jewish university and college students across the GTA – including those associated with Hillel of Greater Toronto, the Canadian Centre for Israel Activism and Hasbara Fellowships, was supported by major Jewish community organizations.  The corner of Yonge and Dundas was filled with waving flags and young voices expressing their desire for peace. Israel’s Consul General Amir Gissin congratulated students for their passion and commitment to Israel.

Ayalim students support southern Israel citizens

While close to a million residents of Southern Israel have been targets for Hamas terrorist missiles from Gaza,  young Israeli’s that are part of Ayalim communities have intensified their aid in the cities and towns under attack.

Student Rally for Israel

A student rally that is expected to attract broad community support for Israel will take place this Sunday, January 18th, 2009 at Dundas Square (Yonge and Dundas) at 1 pm.   Toronto for Israel Rally will demonstrate solidarity for the people of Israel who have endured close to 9,000 Hamas terrorist missiles from Gaza.

Day 2 - Beersheva

Our day began with a visit to the B'nei Shimon Regional Council.  This Council is responsible for a large geographic space around Beersheva.  We learned of their preparedness hearing many of the same things that we had heard the day before in Sderot.  The lessons of the Lebanon War had been learned.

Day 1 - Sderot (con't)

Day 1 - Sderot

We began our day with the hour and a half drive to Sderot.  Along the way we were given the instructions of what to do if we heard the sirens indicating a missile attack.  Thank G-d we did not hear the sirens all day.  [Global National interviews UJA Mission participant Jeff Springer]

Initial Reflections Upon Arrival

Our small solidarity mission just arrived in Tel Aviv and as one would expect, you would never know there was a war going on. The streets are full and bustling and lots of traffic!
